Everything you need to know about industrial diesel fuel meters

The role of a meter is to measure the quantity of liquid flowing through a circuit and to display it in cubic metres or litres. For this reason, meters are often equipped with a mechanical or digital screen. They are noted for their durability and high precision.
Find out everything you need to know about this type of meter, their operation and all their advantages.

How does a diesel fuel meter work?

It is a type of volume meter. They are used in industry to calculate the volumes of fluid flows.
Thanks to their precise measurement and because they are suitable for all liquids regardless of their viscosity, the model used is a gear meter.

It is important to understand that a fuel meter cannot trigger or stop the pumping process. Its role is to measure and determine the exact number of litres deposited in the tanks during the delivery of diesel fuel in a service station. Similarly, in fuel depots, they count the cubic metres of crude oil and other petroleum products in the tanks supplied by tankers.
In addition to their usefulness for fuel delivery, certain meters have other applications, especially flow sensors. That is why they are also called flowmeters.

However, diesel meters are most frequently used by both professionals and individuals to measure the volume pumped to calculate the total price to be paid (NB: standards vary from one country to another) based on the price per litre:

  • in service stations to refuel diesel engine vehicles;
  • on tank trucks that deliver domestic fuel to fill the domestic fuel tanks of persons equipped with oil-fired central heating.

Regardless of how they are used, these devices are noted for their ruggedness and perfect seal. They are not very sensitive to dirt and their sturdiness guarantees you a long life cycle. For certain uses, to ensure ultra-precise performance, it is recommended to install a strainer, a diesel oil filter upstream or a degasser. To minimise the loss of load, it is also essential to properly size the meter according to the flow and therefore according to the hose diameter.

What are the advantages of this type of system?

Placed downstream, the diesel fuel volume meter has many advantages:

Very precise calculation

The displacement diesel fuel meter precisely measures the flow of the liquid in the piping, even when the flow is pulsing. This is notably the case when the volume meter is associated with an oscillating or reciprocating pump, therefore a connection with a piston or diaphragm pump.
Moreover, the industrial diesel fuel displacement meter is not sensitive to the composition and nature of the fluid, its viscosity, density or volumetric mass, if it has been correctly sized.

The measurements thus remain very precise, even when several liquids with different properties are used. This is an advantage for multi-product use, with variations in flow, pressure and temperature. That is why truck fuel distributors use them with fuel pumps, enabling filling with both diesel fuel and unleaded petrol. NB: depending on the liquids pumped, the seals may vary to remain compatible with the liquids.

Exactitude of data and repeatability

Exactitude is a value expressed as a percentage indicating the proportion in which the measure of the flow is close to the real value.
Repeatability enables you to know the number of times you obtain the same result under similar conditions.
Diesel meters have all these qualities, which are particularly appreciated for dosing applications, especially with the automation of programmable meters.

Very easy to install and use

These devices are equipped with a very visible display. Fitted with a digital or mechanical display, they give the measurement in litres or cubic meters and display signal modules. It is also possible to link them to a printer to obtain a complete report.

The wide range of Pompes Japy displacement meters provides you with very precise measurement of the volumes of fluids and particularly of petrol products. The diesel fuel meter is a model that stands out for its durability and ease of use.
